Record in song sections - 8 bar, or 16 bar. If you are doing triplets, you should stick to 1/8 beats with that as well. Don't quantize it at the 1/16 level if you aren't able to play that accurately (you may never need to quantize at the 1/16th level). So to sum up: you can finger-play everything on the iPad, and then quantize it.

SO either turn velocity off or go back and figure out how to max the velocity just on the snares. Or learn how to go back and edit the velocity- the iPad snare velocity on the rock kit. My advice, is for get the nuance for right now). (this is the drum registering how hard you hit it, to provide a ranged nuance of drum sounds. If you got just 1 measure of the drums right and you need that for an 8 bar measure, just cut the bad drums out and clone your good measure 8 times.įourth tip: Also, at least at first, turn off velocity. Third tip: learn to cut and paste using the snip function. Second tip: Only record an 8 or 16 bar measure at a time. Most rock/blues/country is 1/8 beats anyway, what are you recording, disco? So select the 1/8 step or even the 1/4 and it will get it into the closest beat way more accurately than in the 1/16 version. If you played 'off' it will put it in 'off' beat. Remember, it just takes the beats and sticks them in the nearest 'correct' beat slots. I suspect the issue with it 'not sounding right' is you selected a 1/16th beat quanitzation. It's not hard either, you just click the little wrench thingy and select "quantize", and it thats it. Luckily it requires almost no effort on your part, just a few little insider tips: All quantization does is take the drums you finger-beat down and put it into their nearest exact beat slots (and it allows for things like swing, and whether it's a triplet). Okay, that aside: If you are going to use iPad finger-drumming in Garageband- you need to learn how to use quantization. You can also use the finger-drums alongside the session drummer. Step 0- consider using the new Session Drummer function.

Secondly - if I go down this path, can I record everything else through the Mac and then another track through the iPad (eg add the drums) So what do people think? iPad is a good / better starting point then Mac keyboard? Or I just need to practice get better on the Mac? One thing on GarageBand I have never quite worked out is the "quantization" which I think can make your timing more accurate ? It doesn't seem to help me & the loops never seem to fit the songs I play? I was looking at different old school drum machines but after reading some forums it sounds like apps (including GarageBand) on the iPad drums are pretty good and perhaps easier to play drums on then the keyboard ? Is this a fair assumption? It's fine if I want to just do a pretty standard drum sound. However I have found that with the keyboard it's quite tricky to get accurate fast paced drumming. So I have been using GarageBand quite a lot and as part of that using the "musical typing" to get my drum sounds & other.
